Efficient texture synthesis using strict Wang Tiles

چکیده

Wang Tiles are constructed from four texture samples, arranged so they can always match a choice of other tiles at two edges. Because they are precomputed, Wang Tiles are a very efficient way to generate textures on the fly. But matching problems occur within tiles and at the corners of adjacent tiles. By replacing the edge-matching texture samples with a new sample in the center of the tile, and using the graph cut path-finding algorithm, we overcome these problems and introduce additional texture diversity. Our s-Wang Tiles are a stricter interpretation of the original Wang Tile design, and our tile set is also smaller than that required by ω-Tiles: only eight different tiles are required for a non-repetitive titling.

Wang Tiles for Image and Texture Generation

This paper discusses the use of Wang Tiles for image and texture generation as originally presented in Cohen et al. , 2003. Creating large expanses of nonperiodic texture, point distributions or geometry can be efficiently done at runtime by constructing a tiling of the plane using a small set of Wang tiles. Wang Tiles are squares whose edges are each assigned a color. The method involves filli...

Class Notes Tile-Based Methods for Interactive Applications

Many complex signals, such as point distributions and textures, cannot efficiently be synthesized and stored. In this work we present tile-based methods to solve this problem. Instead of synthesizing a complex signal when needed, the signal is synthesized on forehand over a small set of tiles. Arbitrary large amounts of that signal can then efficiently be generated when needed by generating a s...

Non-Periodic Corner Tilings in Computer Graphics

Rendering computer-generated images is both memory and runtime intensive. This is particularly true in realtime computer graphics where large amounts of content have to be produced very quickly and from limited data. Tile-based methods offer a solution to this problem by generating large portions of a specific content out of a much smaller data set of tiles. This dissertation investigates the u...

Wang-Tiles for the Simulation and Visualization of Plant Competition

The Wang Tiles method is a successful and effective technique for the representation of 2D-texture or 3D-geometry. In this paper we present a new method to fill Wang tiles with a 2D-FON distribution or a 3D-geometry in order to achieve a more efficient runtime. We extend the Wang Tiles method to include information about their position. We further demonstrate how the individual tiles are filled...
